Bad news for the online retail giant. Amazon was fined 1.128 billion euros for “abuse of a dominant position” by the competition police in Italy, Thursday, December 9. At issue: discrimination against sellers who had not used its logistics service.

This is one of the biggest fines for practices deemed anti-competitive imposed in Europe on one of the American tech giants, in the sights of many authorities.

“Amazon harmed competing operators” in e-commerce in “promoting its own logistics service” which ships and delivers the packages, found the Italian antitrust after an in-depth investigation. “The abusive strategy adopted by Amazon is particularly serious, as it is likely to discourage or even eliminate competition in the markets concerned”, he judges.

The American group expressed its “deep disagreement” with this sanction, against which he will present an appeal. For Amazon, “the fine and the corrective measures proposed are unjustified and disproportionate”.
