Like every evening, the 11pm news report takes a look at the news broadcast by European television channels. It’s the Eurozapping of Thursday, August 22.

The first curative drug for Alzheimer’s approved in Britain. Mavis, 90, got the treatment thanks to a clinical study. A stroke of luck savoured by her husband Rodney: “It allowed Mavis to keep her personality. She’s still our Mavis.” An injection every 15 days, at an early stage of the disease, helps fight the protein that attacks the brain.

But the side effects are severe and it costs more than 23,000 euros per year. The British public hospital has decided to give it up. The European Union, however, has not yet authorized it. In July, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) had ruled against its marketing. It had pointed out “the risk of serious side effects” with “Potential bleeding in patients’ brains”.
