San Francisco Giants assistant coach Alyssa Nakken became the first woman in history to serve as an on-field coach during a major league baseball regular-season game on Tuesday.

Nakken replaced teammate Antoan Richardson at first base after he was ejected by umpire Greg Gibson early in the third inning of a game against the San Diego Padres.
Previously, she had worked at first base during an exhibition game against the Oakland Athletics in July 2020.
The 31-year-old has worked in the Giants organization since 2014 and has been part of the big club’s coaching staff since January 2020.
“I consider it my job to pay tribute to those who have helped me get to where I am. Coaching, I had never seen that. This job has been hidden for so long. I am excited to step into this role for the challenge and opportunity to make an impact within an organization that I love. But I’m also excited to see that girls can also get a position on the field in baseball, ”she told MLB.com shortly after being hired.
