In recent weeks, from the Jura to the Nièvre, sheep attacks have punctuated the news. In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, one of them constantly reinforces its protection system, in vain.

In Marcoux (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence), thousands of ewes are under the threat of an increasingly present predator: the wolf. Michel Pelestor, sheep breeder, owns 4,000 of these animals. One of his herds was attacked. The wolves appeared at the end of the morning and 15 of his animals died. In the infirmary, some sheep will not make it. For 15 years, the breeder has nevertheless been equipped.

A smart animal

He has a mobile and autonomous chalet that allows his shepherds to stay closer to the animals. It has also invested 100,000 euros in the installation of 20 km of electric fence. But the wolf always finds the flaw. “The fences, the scarers, the dogs, we are in one-upmanship and we realize that everything is always outdated because we are dealing with an intelligent animal”thinks Michel Pelestor.
