From 9:30 a.m., the Parisian municipal police were at the roundabout of the Place du Général Cochet, near the Porte de Pantin, in the 19th arrondissement, for an operation to check the sound level of two-wheelers. It was one of 200 operations scheduled this Thursday as part of the international day against noise. “When the Paris municipal police were created in the spring of 2021, a survey indicated that noise pollution was the first concern of the inhabitants of the capital, explains its director, Michel Felkay. It is therefore our priority“.
Fine of up to 1,500 euros
The Parisian police intend to fight against the multiple causes of these nuisances: road traffic therefore, but also nocturnal crowds or professional use of defective equipment (an air extractor for example). An action was notably planned for this Thursday evening on the quays of the Bassin de la Villette, particularly busy at the end of the day as soon as the weather is milder. Flyers had to be distributed, but also, if necessary, fines. In the event of nuisance on the public highway, this amounts to 68 euros. A two-wheeler that is too noisy can be fined 135 euros. The maximum is provided for a nuisance of professional origin, 1,500 euros.
3,000 PV drawn up last year
3,000 reports of this type were drawn up last year in the capital. The town hall intends to go further. This summer, it will present a thirty-measure plan aimed at reducing the ambient noise level by 2 decibels. The health issue is importantrecalls Dan Lert, deputy in charge in particular of the ecological transition: “Noise makes you sick. On average, road traffic causes all Parisians to lose nine months of life expectancy in good health. An unbridled motorcycle crossing Paris at night can wake up to 10,000 people!“
Crossed avenue Jean Jaurès, Azzedine confirms. A former steelworker now close to retirement, he suffers from tinnitus and has great difficulty coping with ambient noise. A horn, an ambulance siren, everything is a source of stress for him. To the point that he plans to leave the capital as soon as he can: “As soon as I retire, I will go live in the Creuse. My father has a house there, I feel much better there. There is less noise“.
