Following Emmanuel Macron’s letter to the King of Morocco in which he suggested Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, Algeria has decided to recall its ambassador to Paris.
A letter that provoked the anger of Algeria. Algiers recalled its ambassador to Paris as a result of’a letter sent by Emmanuel Macron to the King of Morocco, in which he suggests Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. This issue is very sensitive since it has opposed Algiers and Rabat for almost fifty years. This territory was first under Spanish jurisdiction until the mid-1970s, and since then this region has become a point of contention between Algeria and Morocco.
Algeria denounces a position taken
In a statement, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs deplores the position taken by the French president.This step, which no other French government before it had thought it necessary to take, the current government has taken with great levity and great nonchalance.ure”, the press release states. For its part, the Quai d’Orsay announced that it had taken into account Algeria’s decision to recall its ambassador, without commenting on this decision.
