Alexandre Astier shares exciting insights into the production of Kaamelott 2, which involved an extensive 100-day shoot with a large cast and elaborate sets. He humorously reflects on the challenges faced during filming, including an underwater scene that required him to learn to dive. The first part of the sequel is scheduled for release on October 22, 2025, followed by the second part in 2026, continuing the story of Arthur and his kingdom’s struggles.
Astounding Insights from Alexandre Astier on Kaamelott 2
Alexandre Astier has been buzzing with enthusiasm as he unveils fascinating details about the production of Kaamelott 2! After sharing insights in Première magazine last December, including an initial glimpse of what fans can expect from the much-anticipated sequel to the beloved series, the actor, writer, and director dives deeper into the remarkable journey that this extensive filming represented.
The second installment, split into two volumes, demanded an impressive 100 days of shooting—quite a contrast to the typical 30 days for standard films. Astier characterizes the experience as a ‘colossal shoot,’ featuring ‘lots of studio work, extensive sets,’ and an impressive cast of ’78 actors.’ He succinctly sums it up, saying, ‘it’s a monster.’
Behind the Scenes: A Unique Filming Experience
Emerging from this marathon shoot, Astier humorously notes, ‘I feel like I’ve been through a washing machine but it’s okay,’ during a masterclass available on the Axolot YouTube channel. While he refrains from revealing spoilers, he teases ‘surprises’ in casting without divulging further details. However, he did share a remarkable anecdote about an underwater sequence.
He recounts his experience: ‘I had to get into a small machine designed for underwater scenes. I had envisioned a kind of ancient proto-submarine in the script. Upon arrival at the filming location, I learned that the team hadn’t quite managed to construct the machine based on our plans.’
He adds, ‘The risk of drowning was real! Should we proceed or not? Ultimately, I had to learn to dive without any equipment. Amid the chaos of filming—answering 2000 questions daily, enduring crazy hours, and maintaining an insane pace—there was a moment when production decided, ‘we need to let Alexandre meditate!’ This was essential for diving! I don’t know if any of you have ever dived, but meditation is crucial. Holding your breath is key. I managed to increase my breath-holding time to over four minutes, but I needed solitude! It was quite something to ask a crew of 90 people to ‘leave him alone, he’s breathing.’
Mark your calendars, as the first part of Kaamelott – Second installment is set to hit theaters on October 22, 2025. The two films will be released consecutively, with the second part expected in 2026. This ambitious project, filmed over eight months since last summer, incorporated extensive special effects, and Astier aims to push the boundaries of spectacle even further.
Warning: The following paragraph contains spoilers about the film’s conclusion.
As a reminder, the ending of the first installment hinted at ghostly presences and the gradual physical transformation of Lancelot, Arthur’s formidable rival. The castle faced partial destruction, leaving a kingdom in need of restoration and very few allies to defend it. Unfortunately, this situation appears to worsen with the upcoming diptych, with the first part releasing in just over six months.
