After three postponements, it appears that the world light flyweight championship bout between Kim Clavel and Yesenia Gomez can now go ahead.
The shock of the mid-flies is scheduled for July 29, at the Casino de Montreal. The fight between the contender Clavel (15-0, 3 KOs) and the champion Gomez (19-5-3, 6 KOs) will crown a night of seven fights.
The bout was originally scheduled to be contested on December 17, but an injury to Clavel kept the 31-year-old boxer out of the ring.
In March, Gomez, who will attempt a fifth title defense, needed more time so the fight was rescheduled for April. This time, Clavel contracted COVID-19 and had to withdraw.
After negotiating with the Gomez clan, Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), promoter of the Montrealer, was able to get this fight to take place in Quebec.
The terms of the clash have however changed: Clavel will not be entitled to a guaranteed revenge in the event of defeat, as was the case last year. The only rematch will come if Gomez loses his World Boxing Council (WBC) belt.
Another important point: GYM was not able to obtain the organization of this possible second confrontation in Quebec. This fight would rather take place in Mexico, in the lands of the champion.
First for GYM
This boxing evening will mark the history of the Quebec promoter, who will present three women’s fights for the first time.
In addition to the Clavel-Gomez clash, welterweight Marie-Pier Houle (6-0-1, 2 KOs) will face Brazilian Halanna Dos Santos (14-9, 9 KOs). The evening will also mark the professional debut of Caroline Veyre, who will face Mexican super featherweight Wendy Cruz Castro (0-2).
