Stability: here is the key word the day after the senatorial elections, Monday September 25. The results thus confirmed the domination of the Upper House by the right, the difficulties of the Macronists, in a vote marked by the return of the National Rally to the Luxembourg Palace, with three elected officials.

>> 2023 senatorial elections: the right remains in the majority, the left is making progress, the RN is back… Here are the main lessons from the election

Building on these results, the senatorial majority led by the right and the centrists will have to vote in the coming weeks on the government’s very perilous immigration text. Officially, negotiations will be able to resume between the senate and government… except that behind the scenes, they have never stopped. According to information from franceinfo, an agreement is even close to being found on the most controversial article of the text: the residence permit for professions in shortage.

“Everyone will come out with their heads held high”

Because, far from view, in the corridors of the Luxembourg Palace, everyone has put water in their wine. The centrists, in favor of the residence permit for professions in tension, agree: a law is not essential for the measure to apply, going through regulatory texts, and leaving room to the prefect is entirely possible. On the right, we don’t say anything else: “It doesn’t change anything, and everyone will come out with their heads held high“, wants to believe a senator.

Except that this measure has become a symbol for almost all parties: “We are surrounded by the red lines“, laughs a parliamentarian. The right would therefore prefer to delete the article in question, the centrists only modify it. In either case, this risks getting stuck in the Assembly, where the right is opposes the measure, the majority in favor. And it doesn’t matter if a law changes nothing: the subject is symbolic, and the Senate risks in fact passing the buck to the government.
