The Senate called, Wednesday, May 17, the government to recognize as a genocide the Holodomor, this famine caused at the beginning of the 1930s in Ukraine by the Soviet authorities, at the origin of the death of several million people.

In the presence of the Ukrainian ambassador Vadym Omelchenko, installed in the tribune of honor, a motion for a resolution carried by Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam (LR) was adopted by 327 votes against 16, only the majority communist CRCE group having voted against. She “calls on the French government to officially recognize the starvation, deportation and extermination methodically organized by the Soviet authorities, against millions of Ukrainians in 1932 and 1933, as a genocide”.

“Negation of Ukrainian identity”

The text also invites the government to “publicly condemn the genocide committed by the Soviet authorities against the Ukrainian rural population in 1932 and 1933″. On March 28, the National Assembly recognized the Holodomor as genocide and called on the government to do the same to respond to Kiev’s strong expectations about this painful memory, revived by the Russian invasion of the country. For Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam, who is also President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the current events in Ukraine seem “demonstrate the parallelism between the Holodomor and a Putinian objective of a negation of Ukrainian identity”.
