after the coup, what future for the country?

In Khartoum (Sudan), the situation is more than tense. After a coup orchestrated by the military a few hours earlier, demonstrators were repressed by bullets that would have left at least three dead and 80 injured, according to a union of doctors. In this country of 44 million inhabitants, located between the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa, several politicians, including the Prime Minister, were arrested before being taken to an unknown destination. At the microphone of state television, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burane then declared: “The state of emergency is declared throughout the country. I also suspend all the articles of the Constitution of the government in place but we remain committed to the international agreements signed.“

“What the army is doing is betraying the Sudanese. Every citizen must take action and take to the streets to prevent every armed vehicle from circulating“, estimates a demonstrator. In this country which is supposed to designate a new head of state at the end of 2023, tensions multiply and raise fears of new violence near international institutions. António Guterres, the secretary general of the United Nations has to elsewhere condemned this military coup and demanded the release of all imprisoned political leaders.
