Since the end of the weekend of October 23, the situation has been tense in Briançon, in the Hautes-Alpes. The association, which housed around 200 migrants, mostly Afghans, had to close its doors. They were lodged in a church.

It is emergency accommodation on the ground in a church in Briançon (Hautes-Alpes). They are 150 to 200 migrants, families, single men, mainly Afghans and Iranians, to whom a priest opened the doors of the parish of Sainte-Catherine, property of the diocese. “I am happy that it contributes to a common word, that it allows people to touch this reality, through migration, as long as we have not met the people, we do not really know what we are saying“, explains Father Jean-Michel Bardet.

These migrants came to Briançon to seek temporary accommodation. An association had 80 places, but was quickly overwhelmed by the number, and decided to temporarily close the room. Sunday evening, 230 people had to sleep at the station. “We cannot open, otherwise we will fall into the same pitfalls. Welcome, welcome, welcome again and explode in flight“, predicts Jean Gaboriau, administrator of the association Refuges Solidaires. The organization asks for more places from the State. Out of the question, for the prefecture.
