Daniil Medvedev came from afar to win against Felix Auger Aliassime (9th) in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Wednesday January 26. Led two sets zero by the Canadian, the world number two came out in five sets with wear (6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4). The Russian even had to save a break point on his serve at 5-4 in the fourth set. He becomes the first player to recover such a deficit on this edition of the Australian Open.

Dominated in the first two sets, Daniil Medvedev found himself without solutions against the hard-hitting forehands of the Canadian. Behind a diabolical service, Aliassime seemed untouchable. But the Russian never gave up. He managed to close the game in the tie-break of the third set, interrupted for a few minutes by the rain, and in the last two sets to push his opponent to the fault. He relied on his serve in key moments, when repelling the match point and then serving to win the fourth set with an ace.

Under pressure from the start of the fifth set, the Russian saved three break points in the first game before taking his opponent’s service in stride. On the strength of his serve and numerous winning shots during the first sets, Felix Auger Aliassime dropped in speed over the fourth set before committing too many errors in the fifth. He concedes the break which will be fatal to him on a double fault. The Canadian will especially regret his six missed break points in this final round.

In the semi-finals, Daniil Medvedev will find Stefanos Tsitsipas, imperial against Jannik Sinner earlier in the day. The Russian spent two hours and forty more than his future opponent, which could play. Last year the two players had already met in the semi-finals and the world number two won in three sets. So revenge or identical result? Answer Friday on the Rod Laver Arena.
