A young man drowned in the St. Lawrence River near Verdun Beach in Montreal on Friday evening.
The nautical rescue team of the Montreal Fire Department (SIM) was called around 6:25 p.m. concerning a 22-year-old man who disappeared in the stream near Verdun beach.
Divers were finally able to retrieve the victim’s body around 11:05 p.m.
Teams from the Montreal Police Department and Urgences-santé came to the aid of the SIM during this operation. The inquest has been transferred to the coroner’s office.
Unsupervised area
The victim was not in the supervised area of the Verdun beach, said the mayor of the borough of Verdun, Marie-Andrée Mauger.
The latter called for caution from boaters who would like to venture further into the St. Lawrence.
“The river current is very strong, the coastline is very rugged; the depth can vary suddenly and lead to a large variation in the current, which can be fatal,” she posted on Facebook.
