A young entrepreneur from Moselle sentenced to prison in Morocco for “scam” bitcoin

A young Moselle has just been sentenced to prison in Morocco. Thomas Clausi, 21, receives 18 months in jail and a fine of approximately 3.4 million euros. Thursday, October 20, he was found guilty by the Casablanca court of “fraud” and illegal use of cryptocurrency. The young entrepreneur was imprisoned in Morocco since December 23, 2021.

Moroccan justice accuses him of having used bitcoins to buy a luxury car. However, in Morocco, the use of a cryptocurrency is considered illegal transfer of funds. Thomas Clausi assured the court that he was not aware. Two people filed a complaint against him after a settlement in cryptocurrency and an NSF check.

A trial postponed many times

The young Moselle had been waiting to be tried for almost a year. His trial had been postponed 16 times, according to the statements of his father. The latter had appealed for help at the end of September, saying that his son was simply planning to create a “neo-bank” in Africa.

Another Lorrain, Sébastien Raoult, a 21-year-old from the Vosges, is currently detained
in Morocco in a cybercrime case.
