A new iron curtain
All of Russia’s neighbors (the former USSR) are on high alert, and the treatment that has been meted out to Ukraine is only a foretaste of a scenario from which we must protect ourselves. Ukraine plays the role of shield admirably, but support for those who hold it up must follow. A new, old-fashioned iron curtain will be put in place and stigmatize our century.
Guy Fortin
Accept refugees
Our Canadian aid should be humanitarian in accepting refugees. Militarily, we can only offer a drop in the ocean of NATO member superpowers.
Michael Gagnon
What have we become?
No, no, no, that’s enough, this destruction! Throughout our schools, we teach our children to resolve conflicts peacefully. What a fine example. We Westerners are on the good side, we are the “good guys”, of course. Bullshit! Meanwhile, arms dealers are filling their pockets. To say that Lester B. Pearson has already won a Nobel Peace Prize in Canada, to say that a Jean Chrétien stood up and refused to follow President Bush in an attack in Iraq. What have we become?
Daniele Grenier, Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville
Giving Kyiv the means to win
Giving Ukraine the means to level the playing field with Russia is not enough, it will only lead to a stalemate in the conflict and an increase in suffering. Canada and the NATO countries must give Kyiv the means to win quickly. The world cannot afford the luxury of seeing Putin win and bring fire and blood elsewhere tomorrow. We owe it to the Ukrainians, but also to the thousands of young Russians that the tyrant sends to the butchery every day. Putin must be put out of harm’s way as soon as possible. And other dictators must receive the message that the world will no longer accept any aggression against a sovereign people.
Philippe Riondel, Isle-aux-Coudres
Help in exchange for negotiations
Yes, Canada could do more and save tens, hundreds of thousands of lives by making all military aid conditional on negotiations with Russia.
Olivier Barrette
Too long delays
I consider that the delivery times for weapons promised by Western countries are too long. Ukraine needs it to regain the upper hand.
Robert Gagnon, Laval
Negotiate rather than die
Above all, don’t get bogged down. Take all means to settle and, above all, deflate the egos of NATO. It is better to negotiate than to die.
Marc-Andre de Launiere
The dictator must be stopped
Canada must continue to support Ukraine. The dictator of Russia must be stopped in his murderous plan against Ukraine. It also needs to send a clear message to other dictators that they too will face the same resistance if they decide to go ahead with their plans for invasion.
Michael Martin
Control airspace
To win the war, Ukraine absolutely needs fighter planes. Obviously, Canada cannot send any to Ukraine. Despite Moscow’s nuclear threats, Canada must agree to this aid and encourage its allies to move forward. Airspace control is a winning condition for Ukraine.
Guy Paquette, Saint-Lambert
An internet invasion
Canada does not have the military strength to help Ukraine. The possible help to bring is to make an Internet invasion in Russia to help the Russians to understand the disinformation of which they are victims from their government.
Denise-Vincent
Support Ukraine for our common peace
It would be very helpful if Canada and the allies provided Ukraine with mobile long-range guns so that they could evade Russian missiles. Continuing to support Ukrainians is essential for the peace of all of us.
Anton Georgiev
An existential question for democracy
Since we are not a country with a lot of military means, we should buy this equipment from countries that have it and send it to Ukraine. We should also put our computer skills at the service of this country. Humanitarian aid is also important. We are faced with an existential question for democracy and all efforts are necessary to preserve it!
Francois Gauthier
NATO must protect Ukraine
There is only one solution: for NATO to land in Ukraine to protect the country. If Russia engages barbarians like Wagner’s fighters, Ukraine has the right to have NATO.
Claude Marcil, Montreal
Ukraine, bulwark of our collective freedom
I cannot conceive and understand the reluctance to help a people who serve as a rampart to our collective freedom. Do you really believe that Putin’s desire for conquest will stop with Ukraine? The Canadian North must currently make him salivate! And, as my father would say, we’re not equipped to stay up late on this side!
And how do you think Putin’s other cronies are looking at the situation: China, North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, among other countries, are taking notes and getting ready on the sly. If Ukraine falls, the way will be opened for other territorial conquests and we will have shown that our waltz will have been just that, a waltz!
It’s time to show global cohesion and to establish once and for all that we will be ahead of all the Putins of this world… and that trying to do it again will bring a decisive and immediate response! I am worried about the citizens of tomorrow!
