The toll continues to rise in Turkey and Syria, a week after the earthquake. More than 35,000 dead are to be deplored, according to the latest figures. On the spot, we are still witnessing small miracles.

A week after the earthquake, the rescuers themselves seem incredulous. Méli, 5 years old, is alive. The little boy is in hypothermia, pulled out of the rubble by rescuers from El Salvador. With him, a woman in her thirties. Aware, she manages to move her arms. In the ancient city of Antioch, another small miracle, Monday morning February 13: a woman, alive, is extirpated after spending 175 hours stuck in the cold, under the rubble. But for many, the story is more tragic.

Cemeteries that look like hell

A 60-year-old resident covers the body of his mother, trapped under his building. “She died on Tuesday, before my eyes. I can’t take it anymore, I don’t want an international organization anymore, I don’t want our civil security anymore. I called everyone, they told me: we are volunteers, we are not qualified”, he shouts. The rescue teams are also sometimes angry, Turkey having ordered the clearing of the rubble, the Spaniards have suspended their search and are already at the airport, ready to leave. For these Spanish doctors, the urgency is now to take care of the survivors and provide them with the necessary. The survivors must also organize the funerals, in the chain, of their loved ones out of the rubble, in cemeteries which resemble hell.
