A weather cocktail causes outages in Quebec

Environment Canada issued warnings of significant snow accumulation during the day on Monday in certain regions of Quebec, such as Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Baie-Saint-Paul.

Dangerous winter conditions are even expected near Gaspé on Sunday and Monday.

Further south, the weather advisories are over, but the rain, snow and strong winds have had consequences on the Hydro-Québec network.

A little more than 121,000 residences, businesses and other customers were without power Sunday morning around 10 a.m., most of them in Mauricie with 51,727 customers affected.

“The vegetation thus weighed down came into contact with the network in different places, which caused outages, mainly in the Mauricie and Capitale-Nationale regions. Our teams are working to restore service as quickly as possible,” specifies a message from the state-owned company.

These outages notably affected 34,554 Hydro-Québec customers in the Capitale-Nationale and 15,810 customers in the Laurentides region, around 10 a.m.

The number of outages was increasing in the morning while the situation is likely to evolve in the coming hours in the east where snow and storm surge warnings are in effect until Monday.

Route 175 heading south and north, between kilometer 74 and 244 in Saguenay, is closed due to difficult weather conditions.

Higher than normal water levels and large waves are forecast near the coast on Monday in Baie-Comeau, on the North Shore.

There is also a warning of risk of wave breaking and coastal overflow in Baie-Comeau and Sept-Îles, as well as in several places in the Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie regions.
