A warmer than normal start to the year

Temperatures well above seasonal norms are expected in Montreal at the start of 2023.

The mercury should reach 4°C on Sunday, 3°C on Monday, 5°C on Tuesday, and 6°C on Wednesday in the metropolis, according to Environment Canada. Average high temperatures for early January are below -5°C.

Rain and snow showers are also expected early in the week.

The conditions are far from ideal for winter sports enthusiasts. Just over half of the trails were open Sunday morning at Mont Saint-Bruno and Mont Tremblant ski resorts.

The temperature will drop sharply overnight from Wednesday to Thursday to reach -13°C, and the return to seasonal normals should follow by the end of the week. Clear weather is also expected Thursday through Saturday at least.

More than 2,300 Hydro-Quebec customers were without power Sunday morning, according to the government corporation’s website. Most of the outages were recent, having started since December 30.

In Saint-Paulin-Dalibaire, in Bas-Saint-Laurent, a blackout affecting 14 customers had been underway since December 23. Recovery is expected on Monday.
