The Super Bowl, the biggest event in American football, watched by 100 million viewers, offers a huge show every year at halftime. Monday night, rap will be worthily represented.
When the trailer for the event was released a few weeks ago, fans could hardly believe it. Five behemoths of American rap are on the bill: Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Dr. Dre. All will meet at the “halftime show”, the most watched show of the year in the United States, to the delight of rap fans. “When I heard Eminem was there, my God, I fell over. I wouldn’t miss it for the world, he’s my favorite rapper”enthuses this amateur rapper from a club in Washington, happy to finally see this musical genre obtain recognition of this magnitude.
For more than fifty years, from Michael Jackson to Madonna, from the Rolling Stones to Beyonce, the show with 100 million viewers has devoted the biggest stars of rock, RnB and pop. Rap did not occupy such a place there until now. Some of these icons have a sulphurous past: Eminem was condemned for carrying weapons, Snoop Dogg knew the gangs and the prison. But Joe Lapan, record store, recalls that rap has won its letters of nobility and “has become a fundamental part of the music industry, be it concerts, online music and even physical music”.
