Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will have waited for the very last hours of her mandate to unveil her report on the treatment of Uyghurs, a Muslim minority, in China, in Xinjiang. It validates the accusations against the Chinese regime of torture and sexual violence against Uyghurs. It is also about crimes against humanity.
Regularly, associations, the United States or even European countries warn about the fate of the Uyghur Muslim minority in China. This is the first time that the UN has addressed the subject in a damning report published by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. “The extent of arbitrary and discriminatory detention of members of Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim groups (…) may constitute international crimes, in particular crimes against humanity.”
Since 2014, internment camps have multiplied in the Xinjiang region, located in eastern China. 10 to 20% of the Muslim population would have passed through these camps. According to the UN report, the accusations of recurring acts of torture are credible. Which contradicts the official Beijing version. For the Chinese power, these camps are in fact training centers intended to re-educate the population. China condemns the UN report. UN High Commissioner Michèle Bachelet did not give in to pressure and released the report 15 minutes before leaving her post for good.
