A theatrical essay split into two parts

What is true? What is wrong? The truth has been roughly abused in recent years. The play The End of Fiction explores, through the ages, the interactions between true and false and reality and fiction.

On view until April 9 at the Théâtre Périscope, the creation of the company Nuage en Pantalon and the Théâtre Catapulte is a theatrical essay that unfolds in a variety of forms.

It starts with a very successful prehistoric introductory scene reminiscent of the first images of the classic 2001, A Space Odyssey.

The first humans do not stumble upon a mysterious monolith, but upon images and the excesses of the modern world.

” How did we get there ? », launches one of the characters, in an incomprehensible language.

This scene is the starting point of a series of exploded episodes which tackles the beginnings of the printing press, Buffalo Bill, the world of Disney, the hippie counter-culture and the arrival of Apple, Facebook and Google.

We find ourselves on a tennis court, in a Comedy Club, around a candle, in a funny segment, where we wonder about what we find in the Bible, a talk show and on the road towards Stanford University.

Magic

The End of Fiction is a work of two hours fifty with a lot of information. We come out of the first part a little dazed. After the intermission, everything falls into place with a well-turned, successful and entertaining segment.

A magic number endowed with great inventiveness also takes us into the world of social networks and targeted advertising.

Olivier Normand offers a solid performance, which is paired with perfect diction in this segment, combining play and illusions. Carolanne Foucher, Marie-Hélène Lalande, John Doucet and Sarah Villeneuve-Desjardins complete the cast.

A segment that makes us reflect on the enormous place of social networks in our lives. An epilogue offers a beautiful moment of reflection with a desire to find a kind of refuge.

The End of Fiction is a dense and demanding work. The second part brings this theatrical essay to another level and makes it possible to forget the sometimes messy side of the first part.
