A Sunday in Souraide

Direction Souraïde this week, a Labourdin village located about 25 kilometers from Bayonne and bordering Saint Pée sur Nivelle, Espelette, Ustaritz and Ainhoa. We left our microphones at the hotel restaurant Bergara, and were received by Mirentxu Massonde, accompanied by Mattin Lafitte, Paxkal Etxegaray and Estitxu Diribarne.

Hotel restaurant Bergara

This establishment has been owned and managed by the Mirentxu Massonde family for a hundred years and is located in the heart of the village. On the food side, the Bergara restaurant offers typical Basque cuisine with quality local products; they have essential dishes such as the eel dish or the axoa. On the night side, they offer a set of rooms or studios throughout the year.

The Alaiki dance group

When you are born in Souraïde, one of the obligatory passages is the Basque dance group Alaiki. It was created a little over 30 years ago now and today has around 50 dancers, with children from 6 years old. Alaiki offers traditional Labourdine dance classes but also from other provinces of the Basque Country. Each year, they put on a show in which all levels dance on the occasion of the opening of the patronal festivals of the village. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with Estitxu Diribarne if you want to register for the 2022 school year!

Soka Tira Zuraide

It’s been thirty years since the Soka Tira club was created in Souraïde with the help of saratar Mattin Lafitte. Since then, the club has grown and now has about thirty practitioners, men and women. Soka tira, a very physical and very technical sport, is gradually disappearing everywhere in Iparralde but remains in Souraïde. The Soka Tira Zuraide club participates each year in the world championship with a men’s team and also offers a demonstration during patronal festivals. Don’t hesitate to come and see them during one of their training sessions!

Zuraideko Laminak

It is the village festival committee, chaired this year by Paxkal Etxegaray. It is a large committee since it has 38 members, all children of the village. This year, the patronal feasts will take place from July 21 to 25 with a busy program to be found shortly on Zuraideko Laminak’s facebook page. New for this 2022 edition, on Monday July 25 there will be a local producers’ market and there are still places left to be an exhibitor there, to register you must send an email to “[email protected]”.
