A Sunday in Guéthary

Guéthary, Labourdin village on the Basque coast, bordering Bidart and Saint Jean de Luz. Its inhabitants are the Getariar (or Guetharian for newcomers); this village which is known for its whaling history. This week we put our microphones at the Txamara restaurant, where we welcomed, in addition to the host, representatives of three associations of the village.

Restaurant Le Txamara

Located at the port of Guéthary, almost with its feet in the water, the restaurant Le Txamara is a good place to come and eat or drink a coffee. Renaud Bouchet and his team welcome you there all year round with a menu adapted to the seasons. Menu, in which we always find fresh, local products, always well worked. Don’t hesitate to go for a little walk, accompanied by a ray of sunshine, it’s the perfect spot to feel like you’re on vacation even at home.

Seafarers

Gathering of lovers of the sea and the history of the village of Guéthary, the members of the association Les Gens de Mer are committed to maintaining and preserving the small port of their village and to perpetuate the history of the fishing and whaling that existed there a few years ago. Each year, they organize, as is their tradition, a party, the port party; it is organized around August 15 and offers plenty of entertainment throughout the day which, this year, ended with a magnificent fireworks display.

Olharroa pelota club

Association which celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, the Olharroa pelota club was the first club to be born following the creation of the French pelota federation. We play grand chistera, baline, cesta punta, bare hand and xare. If you are interested in registering your child for one of the club’s pelota specialties, it’s still possible!!

Getari Enea Cinema

Emblematic and historical place of Guéthary, it is two years ago that the Getari Enea cinema reopened its doors to the delight of the inhabitants of the village. On site, you will of course find film screenings, in French and in Basque. They also offer workshops, exhibitions and there is an associative café. Their goal is to find this place of historical conviviality and to gather around culture.
