Health: a promising discovery from the CNRS against breast cancer – (France 2)

Researchers may have discovered how to stop breast cancer from metastasizing. Damien Mascret’s explanations, on the set of 20 Heures, Wednesday January 31.

This is considerable hope for women victims of aggressive breast cancer. The CNRS may have discovered a way to prevent metastases from appearing and multiplying. This discovery was made by a Franco-American team, under the leadership of the CNRS. One in five breast cancers metastasizes. “What the researchers discovered was that, in this case, there was a protein called SMYD2 that was present in far too abundant quantities.“, explains Damien Mascret, doctor and France Télévisions journalist.

Chances of survival drop with metastases

By blocking this protein, the researchers noticed that there were no more metastases. “When there are metastases, the chances of survival drop drastically. Now all that remains is to move from the mouse to the human being. If the results are as effective, with as few side effects, well, yes, it is indeed very promising.” concludes Damien Mascret.
