A high school baseball team found itself in trouble pretty quickly after a costly mistake during its championship game. Here’s why you should never celebrate too soon…
Saturday in Batavia, New York, the Hornell Red Raiders thought they had beaten the Palmyra-Macedon (Pal-Mac) school, but an obscure rule came to play tricks on them.

At the end of the seventh and final inning, while the score was 5 to 4, the pitcher thought he had made the third out, synonymous with victory, by fanning the batter. Except that the receiver did not catch the ball well, which hit the ground. A simple throw towards first base could have allowed the Red Raiders to get their hands on this Section V title, but the intoxication of victory seized the teenagers.
Meanwhile, two riders from Pal-Mac completed their lap of the trails to seal the outcome of the encounter. The young players took to the pitch in celebration, much to the amazement of Hornell’s representatives.
The Raiders coaches did try to seek an explanation from the official, but the rules are the rules. These young people will hopefully learn an important lesson from this day.
