Whoever has mainly acted as a starter during his career should be used in long relief to complete missions of more than one inning.

The deal includes a guaranteed salary of US$5.5 million, or US$4.5 million for the 2022 season and a $1 million buyout option in 2023. If the Rangers want to retain Richards’ services in 2023, his salary will be increased to 9 million US.

Richards went 7-8 with a 4.87 ERA last season with the Boston Red Sox. He had 22 starts before being sent on relief in August. He then made 18 appearances on the mound as a reliever.

The 33-year-old Richards spent 11 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Los Angeles Angels (2011-2018), San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox.
