The reason for his action is still unknown. A man threatened to attack members of the police in Hamburg with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail, on the sidelines of a Euro match between the Netherlands and Poland, before being shot by the police and hospitalized, the police announced on Sunday June 16.
“The attacker came out of a cafe and threatened police officers”, a local police spokesperson told AFP. The police ended up shooting him and “by injuring his leg”. The attacker was hospitalized, local police said on X.
“There is no evidence that there is a link” between this attack and the match scheduled for the afternoon between the Netherlands and Poland in Hamburg, for which a large police force was deployed. The attack took place near the very touristy Reeperbahn avenue, a little over a kilometer from the “fan zone” set up for Euro 2024 football.
