A lost youth? | The duty

Nowadays, young children spend part of their free time working. Some even start at only 12 years old thanks to a simple parental agreement.

We often see very young people at the McDonald’s window giving us our order on a Saturday morning. These children have chosen to spend their weekends working instead of having fun and enjoying their once-in-a-lifetime youth. They therefore spend much less time playing outside with their friends and family, as many have done.

In addition, these young people therefore have less time to devote to their studies, and experts are concerned about the consequences. They say that interest in school, among young people who work a lot, is lower and that mental health is less good. These young people will be less inclined towards higher education, since they will have experienced financial freedom very quickly. They will therefore want to enter the labor market more quickly.

The Minister of Labor is going to introduce a bill which aims to set limits for these children on the labor market. The minimum age would be set at 14, with some exceptions. There would also be a maximum number of 10 hours per week from Monday to Friday, except during holidays. These laws will prevent a drop in school perseverance and even prevent a possible dropout.
