a historic selection, with six directors competing for the Palme d’Or

What there is to know

All the spotlights were on Iris Knobloch and Thierry Frémaux. The president and the general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival announced, Thursday, April 13, the list of films selected in official competition for this 76th edition. There place of female directors, still largely in the minority, was particularly scrutinized. Six directors will be in the running for the Palme d’or during the 76th edition (May 16 to 27), something never seen before. This live is now over.

Among these women, two French women. They are directors Catherine Breillat and Justine Triet. Also note the presence of a young Senegalese filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy and the Tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania. The film that will open the festival, Jeanne du Barry (out of competition), is also directed by a director: the Frenchwoman Maïwenn.

A president of the jury twice webbed. Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund will have the honor of chairing the jury. At 48, he succeeds French actor Vincent Lindon, who awarded him the Palme d’Or in 2022 for his satirical film Without filter. He had already received the supreme award in 2017 with The Square. “No other place in the world arouses such a desire for cinema when the curtain rises on a film in competition”he reacted after the announcement of his appointment.

Maïwenn’s new film opening. It is a French historical film which will launch the festivities on May 16th. Entitled Jeanne du Barrythe sixth film by French actress and director Maïwenn, traces the life of King Louis XV’s favorite, starring Johnny Depp, Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory, Noémie Lvovsky and India Hair.

Giants of the 7th art expected on the Croisette. Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodovar, Harrison Ford, Wes Anderson, Wim Wenders, Ken Loach… We have lost count of the number of directors, actresses and leading actors who should walk the red carpet of this 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. A special tribute will be dedicated to the career of Harrison Ford, whose fifth installment in the saga IndianaJoneswill be screened out of competition on May 18.
