This is a first since 1960: Hollywood actors went on strike on Thursday July 13. They join the movement initiated by the screenwriters. At the heart of this showdown, a revaluation of certain salaries and concerns about the threat of artificial intelligence.

With the biggest strike in the cinema industry for more than 60 years, the dream machine of Hollywood (United States) is put on hold. Thursday, July 13, the American union, which represents nearly 160,000 actors, joined that of screenwriters, already on strike for more than two months. Headliners promoting Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer walked out of the London (UK) premiere in support of the move.

Two main demands

“If the leadership of our union says that the terms of the studios are not fair, then we have to hold on to get a decent deal, especially for the many actors who are not at the top of the bill”, believes Matt Damon. Actors and screenwriters did not find agreement with the producers on two essential points. First, they no longer receive income from reruns, since Netflix and other online platforms buy works on a package basis.

Then, the arrival of artificial intelligence is not supervised, and worries the profession. The credits of the new Marvel series have been entirely produced by an AI.
