French journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was the victim of shrapnel, Monday, May 30, while following a humanitarian operation in Ukraine. France calls for the opening of a transparent investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff was 32 years old, and had been a journalist-cameraman for BFM for six years. On the morning of Monday May 30, he was sitting in the front of a humanitarian vehicle when shrapnel hit him. He was going to film the evacuation of civilians with his team. “It was the second time that Frédéric had gone to Ukraine, at his request. (…) To express his commitment. (…) It is not a taste for risk, it is a taste for storytelling, a taste for story that is written live and for which Frédéric lost his life this morning”commented Marc-Olivier Fogiel, the general manager of BFM.
Currently in Ukraine, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has called for an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy. Catherine Colonna denounces “a crime”. Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff is the eighth journalist killed in Ukraine since the start of the conflict. “There is Vladimir Putin’s responsibility (…) to let, if not assume, that Russian soldiers deliberately shoot journalists”, believes the Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders, Christophe Deloire. The BFM colleague and the interpreter who accompanied the team will return to France on the evening of May 30.
