In Marseilles, in the Bouches-du-Rhône, a ferry has been refurbished to house 1,600 Ukrainian refugees, mainly women and children. The first people were welcomed on Tuesday 29 March.
In the heart of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), a boat has become a haven of peace for Ukrainian refugees. The first arrived on the morning of Tuesday, March 29, leaving behind them a country at war. “It’s a relief. I’ve never been on a big boat, such a big ship”, says Inna. Inside, the cabins have been transformed into bedrooms, the bar into a playroom for children.
The signs have been translated into Ukrainian, and other services are planned to accompany the refugees. “There will be a floating hotel that will be made available to them, but also social support, health support, (…) in terms of training, education for children”, explains Christophe Mirmand, prefect of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region. Scarred by the war, Ukrainian refugees can be taken care of on the boat. 1,600 people are expected, the majority of whom are women and children.
