After nineteen years of fierce struggle, the Resistance and Deportation Association (AMRD) finally got what it wanted: the opening of a departmental museum devoted to this period of history. The project, which had been dormant since the creation of the association, will finally see the light of day in Creuse.
The initial location, in Guéret, has been abandoned. This Museum of Resistance and Deportation will ultimately be located in the cultural center Jean Lurçat in Aubusson. The department, owner of the walls, voted in February for aid of 30,000 euros to develop this new place of memory.
It’s been twenty years that we say that there will be a museum, but this is a reality
For the volunteers, it is the culmination of a project remained in the cards for almost two decades : “It has been said for twenty years that there will be a museum, many people have lost hope, but this is a reality”rejoices Bénédicte Windle, communications officer for the association.
Portraits of young Creusois to embody history
This museum aims to educate future generations, and allow them to better understand the context of the Second World War. The scenography will revolve around portraits of young Creusois: the daily life of a child despite the rationing, the arrival of a little Alsatian refugee in his class, a young adult who receives his papers to work in Germany…
You will also find objects, original documents collected by the association. They will tell the story of the saved jewish children in Creuse, explains Bénédicte Windle: “The main thing is to make these tragic years understood and brought to life beyond the monuments that we see in our villages and towns.”
