A delegation of French historians is going to Algeria to work on the war and colonization with Algerian historians, franceinfo learned Tuesday, November 21 from corroborating sources, confirming information from AFP. This commission meets for the first time on Wednesday and Thursday in Constantine. It is co-chaired by the French historian Benjamin Stora and the Algerian historian Mohamed Lahcen Zighidi.

This body made up of ten members was announced in August 2022 by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Emmanuel Macron, traveling to Algiers, during a visit intended to “refound” relations between the two countries, after several months of tension.

During this visit, Emmanuel Macron announced that the two countries had decided “to open their archives” to allow this “mixed commission” to watch “the entire period that was decisive for us, from the start of colonization to the war of liberation, without taboo. With a desire for free historical work and full access to our archives”.
