For the many customers who are queuing to get their hands on the Volkswagen ID.4, a light has come on at the end of the tunnel. The German automaker recently announced that production of the electric crossover has officially begun at its assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

This will certainly take the pressure off the group’s German assembly lines, which are struggling to meet demand. There’s also the supply chain variable that inevitably slows production of this cornerstone of Volkswagen’s electrification in North America.
In addition to producing the all-wheel-drive version currently marketed here, the American plant will produce a two-wheel-drive version at the end of the year, powered by a lower-capacity battery (62 kWh). This will lower the model’s entry barrier.
The first “American” ID.4s will be delivered next October.
