A 91-year-old Mayennaise knits cotton breasts for women who are victims of breast cancer

Suzanne Beaudet has a passion that takes up all her time: “I love knitting, I can’t go ten minutes without knitting“, says this 91-year-old Mayennaise. By dint of knitting gloves, scarves or even slippers, the pieces accumulate in her small apartment in Louverné near Laval. Two years ago, she found the solution thanks to at the association Les Petites Mains.
The nonagenarian now manufactures cotton breast prostheses which are then used by women who have had their breasts removed after cancer.

“My passion is knitting”

There are balls everywhere at Suzanne Beaudet. All the pieces she knits are then stacked in crates. “So there, it’s chokers. There, it’s hats and gloves. Often it’s slippers“, describes this former boss of a cabinetmaker.

In 2020, Suzanne Baudet comes across the announcement of an association. Les Petites Mains is looking for knitters to make cotton breast prostheses. This voluntary activity is timely because she no longer has a place to keep all her knitting. “This is so as not to stock up. There, at least, what I do, goes away. I’ll tell you: I’m thinking about my passion, about me. What I do, so much the better if it helps. My passion is knitting“, underlines the nonagenarian. This year, Suzanne Baudet knitted more than 400 breast prostheses of different sizes. The association Les Petites Mains provides her with balls of cotton. “It’s very simple when you know how to do it. Do not be mistaken“, smiles Suzanne Beaudet.

The cotton prostheses are then recovered by the association, then given to women who have had their breasts removed. Suzanne Beaudet, she hopes to be able to knit “until the end“.”I can’t see myself not being able to knit and still be here… How long would the time be!“, she sighs.

Knitwear is everywhere in Suzanne Beaudet’s apartment: gloves, neck warmers, slippers and even mittens.
