A 2nd century Roman temple discovered under the former Saint-Louis hospital in Evreux

It is a major discovery. In Evreux, archaeologists from the Departmental Archaeological Mission of Eure (MADE) unearthed the remains of a Roman temple during excavations on the former site of the Saint-Louis hospital. It is a Gallo-Roman temple from the 2nd century which was totally unknown until then.

Excavations until March 2023

“We were paying attention to finding thermal baths and we came across a Roman temple. That’s what makes this discovery as unexpected as it is exceptional! Because all the temples of this kind are “already” discovered in the big cities. is rare, in the life of an archaeologist, to bring a new one to light”explains Pierre Wech, archaeologist at MADE, in charge of the site.

According to initial findings, it is for the moment still difficult to identify the deity celebrated in this temple. During the construction of the Evreux maternity ward, Gallo-Roman baths had already been discovered. Excavations are to continue until March 2023.
