It’s the new teenage phenomenon that everyone is talking about on the social network TikTok: the French application Ten Ten is the most downloaded on the Apple Store and Android. Its principle is to transform your phone into a real walkie-talkie. Ten Ten works even when your phone is locked, in silent mode or if the application is closed. This is also assumed by the creators, because even before installing the application, it is written in the description on the download platforms: “Sing, shout or whisper, your friends will hear you in real time“.
As soon as a contact is added to the application, via a personal PIN code for each user, they can decide to connect and speak to an interlocutor. The sound comes directly to the phone’s speakers, there is no need to answer like a traditional call. When someone contacts you, their username appears on your screen, along with the phrase “is talking”, then when the communication ends, a “finished” notification appears. To not be disturbed, simply turn off your phone, or put yourself in “do not disturb” mode.
On TikTok, many portray themselves using the application. For example, the video of a user who claims to be woken up by activating the application has seven million views. Some adolescents also share having received sanctions in class, because of the application.
The Ten Ten teams specify that they do not store conversations, and that they cannot even listen to them. On the other hand, the private data which is entered in the application can be used in their commercial interest when it is “reasonably necessary“, according to their confidentiality rules.
