Anger does not abate in Georgia. Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tbilisi on the evening of Thursday, May 2, to protest against a bill perceived as pro-Russian and anti-European.
Hand in hand, they block the bill on foreign influence. Tens of thousands gathered on Heroes’ Square in Tbilisi (Georgia) on the evening of Thursday, May 2. The demonstrators, mainly young people, waved European flags and chanted anti-Russian slogans. “The government expected them to get tired, but the number of people is increasing”observes a woman who came to protest.
A bill inspired by Russian legislation
Since April 9, demonstrations have been gaining momentum in Georgia, as has repression. Thursday evening, several demonstrators were arrested. “They beat us every day, poison us with gas, but we won’t stop”, assures a woman. The bill, inspired by Russian legislation, would make it possible to repress the opposition according to its detractors, and would compromise Georgia’s membership in the European Union.
