The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed a plot to illegally sell Chinese drones and military equipment in Libya while the suspects were employed by the Civil Aviation Organization international (ICAO) in Montreal.
In a press release released Tuesday, the RCMP specified that the individuals involved allegedly circumvented international sanctions using foreign front companies.
The accomplices worked at ICAO, a UN organization whose head office is in Montreal.
Conspiracy charges were filed against 61-year-old Fathi Ben Ahmed Mhaouek and 37-year-old Mahmud Mohamed Elsuwaye Sayeh.
The latter, who is still wanted and subject to an arrest warrant, is said to have used a ploy to camouflage the seller and buyer of military equipment, material which is the subject of UN sanctions for Libya. .
As for Mr. Mhaouek, he was arrested and is accused of having “conspired to facilitate transactions for the purchase of Libyan oil between prohibited entities and the People’s Republic of China contrary to the United Nations Act.” The individual must appear Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse.
