The hostage takers of millions of citizens

Brian Myles, Director of Dutyends its editorial of December 29 with a just and concise observation: “Those who refuse vaccination […] should be made to assume the full consequences of their decision. However, in fact, a few thousand irresponsible people have taken millions of their fellow citizens hostage and are unresponsive to calls for vaccination. Nothing to do: they triumph. For many of them, it seems like this is the first time in their lives that they have had some form of authority – that of refusing a vaccine – and they have decided to exercise it regardless of the consequences. What to do ?

Authorities may need to consult with police officers specializing in hostage-taking. They know how to negotiate, let solutions drag out, blow hot and cold, starve these convicts and force them to surrender, dead or alive. The Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, affirmed on December 28 that these non-vaccinated would undoubtedly be contaminated by the virus of COVID-19 in the next three months. In a traditional hostage-taking, it is rare that we agree to let the event last so long.

What are these “very serious decisions” to which the minister was referring when he indicated that action had to be taken? Impose hospital fees on unvaccinated sick people? Make vaccination compulsory for all?

In the long term, a solution seems obvious to me: we need better education and better information. But, in the short term, we have to decide. I imagine that the editorial writers of our national press will be able to suggest solutions.
