Fighting in Sudan between the army and paramilitaries has displaced “nearly eight million” of people, deplored the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Wednesday January 31. The war has raged since the spring of 2023 between the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhane and the Rapid Support Forces of General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, former number two in military power.

Due to the conflict, “eight million people have been driven from their homes in Sudan, the majority internally displaced, but also increasingly externally” of the country, declared Filippo Grandi, during a visit to Ethiopia. “More than a million and a half have found refuge in neighboring countries: Egypt, Chad, Central Africa, South Sudan and Ethiopia”he added.

The war has left thousands dead, including between 10,000 and 15,000 in a single town in Darfur, according to UN experts. “The crisis in Sudan, which has caused enormous humanitarian suffering (…), is poorly funded”protested the head of the UNHCR, recalling that last year “less than 40% of the budget” necessary had been found. “It’s not acceptable”he insisted, “I understand that there are other, more visible crises. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t an emergency”.
