Anger of farmers: very restrictive European standards
Anger of farmers: very restrictive European standards – (FRANCEINFO)
Growing one cereal rather than another, sowing on a fixed date without taking into account the context or the weather… French farmers must face very strict European regulations.
In December 2023, a farmer was supposed to sow wheat, but it was impossible. His fields were waterlogged due to heavy rains in the fall previous. “Planting cereal in these conditions, we know that it will not rise”, deplores Jean-Bernard Sallat, president of the cattle section of the FNSEA of Charente. European regulations require him to cultivate wheat in 2024, then only in 2023it was corn. This crop rotation serves to preserve the earth. The farmer won’t be able to do it on time, so he has to justify everything.
Monitoring sometimes too complicated
These steps are mandatory under penalty of losing part of the 60,000 euros in European aid that it receives each year. For two weeks, Jean-Bernard Sallat has been filling out tedious documents, according to him. For their part, breeders must declare each treatment on an application.
