War in the Gaza Strip: towards the end of the offensive? – (France 2)
The Israeli army bombarded the southern Gaza Strip on the night of January 15-16. Hamas says several dozen people were killed. The Israeli Defense Minister announced that the phase of intense fighting was coming to an end.
A phase of the war ends, with Israeli tanks leaving the Gaza Strip, after three months of fighting. “In northern Gaza, the intensive phase is over. In the South, it will soon be“, declared Yoav Gallant, Israeli Minister of Defense. Intense bombings took place on the night of January 15 to 16. The Israeli army claims to have dismantled all the Hamas battalions in the north of Gaza, in price of mass destruction.
Few troops posted
According to an expert, few troops will remain stationed there. Hamas members would be more easily spotted from outside the country. However, the army claims to retain the right to intervene at any time, with more than 10,000 soldiers. In the center and south, Israeli interventions focus on tunnels and weapons factories. Israel says it has killed 9,000 Hamas militiamen, compared to 24,000 deaths announced by the Minister of Health in Gaza.
