It’s not just the law

In a democratic society, the judiciary represents one of the three powers, along with the executive and the legislature. But there is not only the judicial power in a society governed by the law, there are also socially acceptable behaviors and socially unacceptable behaviors which have nothing to do with the law. Patrick Moreau’s text “The Reign of the Arbitrary” concerns the presumption of innocence following accusations made by the judiciary, in which I agree with the author.

However, in the Depardieu affair, what is the subject of his popular condemnation does not relate to the rape cases for which he is awaiting trial, therefore from the judiciary, but rather to the very vulgar remarks offending anyone who has learned the basic social norms of respect, solidarity and living together. The words of this great actor, whom I have always appreciated, give the image of a cad and a libidinous person. Why should we accept him because he is a known and recognized actor even outside France? For my part, I will always recognize his immense talent as an actor, but I will no longer accept the man he has become.
