“Following extensive search efforts, the Police Service’s Marine Unit recovered the body of the second youth,” the Ottawa Police Service announced Thursday evening. We express our most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as to all those affected by this tragic loss.”
The search began Wednesday evening when authorities were called to Nicolls Island Road around 9:45 p.m., when four teenagers had fallen under the ice of the Rideau River.
Two of the young people were immediately rescued before being transported to hospital.
But the other two, aged 16 and 17, were not as lucky. The remains of one of them were recovered the same evening.
Ottawa police say they carried out an underwater rescue operation, including at night “in very difficult conditions.”
