“Do Brasil”, Wilhem Latchoumia | The duty

It is pleasant and gratifying to talk about such records at the holiday time, because La Dolce Volta releases are, in themselves, like gifts. Remember that this French publisher is a fan of CDs and “beautiful products”, that is to say, publications that we can be proud to offer or receive. After a disc dedicated to Manuel de Falla which had already attracted our attention, we were very curious to examine this Villa-Lobos program by the Martinican pianist Wilhem Latchoumia. He understands the Choros 2 And 5the study Ondulandolarge extracts from Cirandasthe emblematic “Wild Poem” (Rudepoêma) and three short pieces (The music box is broken, Baby Goes to Sleep and New York Skyline Melody). The 16 Cirandas (1926), of which Latchoumia selected 10, are a sort of Brazilian equivalent of Preludes by Debussy, with an added folkloric touch, for example in the impressive Let’s go to the other side of the mountain. Latchoumia is just as admirable in the disheveled rhythms as in the haunting nostalgia.
