“We must respect the vote” of Parliament, says Éric Ciotti

“We must respect the vote” of Parliament on the immigration law, launches Thursday December 21 on France Inter Éric Ciotti, president of the Les Républicains (LR) party. The deputy for Alpes-Maritimes protests against the comments made on Wednesday by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who “confirmed” on France Inter that measures in the text are contrary to the Constitution and thus refer the matter to the Constitutional Council. Éric Ciotti judges this “very shocking”.

The president of the LR recalls that “the law was voted on (…), adopted by a joint committee, in the Senate”. “She was the fruit of an agreement from the Prime Minister”after hours of negotiations between the presidential majority and the right, supports Éric Ciotti.

Fear of “political pressure”

Éric Ciotti explains that he spoke to Elisabeth Borne on the phone on Wednesday to remind him of his commitments and to “to say that what she did was extremely dangerous”. “If respect for the word has no meaning, no value, if the word of the government and if the vote of Parliament has no value, what will the French think?”, asks the boss of the right. According to Eric Ciotti, “there would be no further capacity for discussion”. He thus highlights “the relative majority” from the government to the National Assembly, implying that the executive needs the right to pass its texts.

The president of the LR party does not want “not prejudge the decision of the Constitutional Council”but fears “political pressures”explaining that members of the body “are appointed by the President of the Republic”. Éric Ciotti assures to see from Emmanuel Macron “a desire for the Constitutional Council to replace Parliament”. “Be careful that it does not become a political body”warns the boss of the right.
