Aurélien Rousseau unveiled a new plan against smoking, which also provides for the extension of tobacco-free spaces to beaches, parks and around public places.
The price of a packet of cigarettes will increase to 12 euros in 2025, announced the Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau, during the presentation to the press of a national anti-tobacco plan 2023-2027, Tuesday November 28. And its price will continue to increase during the following year, in 2026, to reach 13 euros. “Smoking bans and price increases work and are very effective”declared the minister. This is the subject of scientific consensus worldwide. It is the most effective measure against tobacco, according to the WHO and all independent studies on the subject..
Tobacco-free spaces will be generalized to all beaches, public parks, forests, and around certain public places, notably schools, Aurélien Rousseau also announced. “Tobacco-free will now be the norm”said the minister. “Tobacco-free spaces – which are already more than 7 200 across more than 73 departments – are above all the result of a movement driven locally by the municipalitieshe clarified. Today we are reversing the responsibility and establishing this principle which is becoming the rule.”
“As the Prime Minister committed, we will ban puffs, these disposable or single-use electronic cigarettes”, continued Aurélien Rousseau. The minister described them as“an aberration both from the point of view of public health and that of their environmental footprint”. Pharmacies, finally, will be able to prescribe nicotine replacement therapies.
